How We Rate

How We Rate Pet Insurance

Every provider on PetInsurely is scored with our transparent PetInsurely Score — a 100-point methodology applied consistently, so no provider can pay for a better ranking.

The PetInsurely Score: 100 points

1. Coverage depth — 30 points

We evaluate what’s actually covered: accident and illness coverage, hereditary and congenital conditions, chronic condition handling, dental illness, behavioral therapy, prescription food and medications, and available wellness add-ons. Broader, more inclusive coverage scores higher.

2. Cost & value — 25 points

We compare average monthly premiums for common profiles (young, adult, and senior dogs and cats), deductible options, reimbursement rates (70–90%+), annual limits, and multi-pet discounts. The best value — strong coverage at a fair price — wins, not simply the cheapest plan.

3. Claims experience — 25 points

We assess how easy it is to get paid: claim filing methods (app, web, email), average reimbursement speed, direct vet payment options, pre-approval for expensive treatments, and transparency when claims are denied. Faster, simpler claims score higher.

4. Customer trust — 20 points

We look at verified customer reviews, complaint ratios with state regulators, years in business, financial stability of the underwriter, and quality of customer support. Providers with a proven track record of treating customers fairly score highest.

Our review process

  1. Data collection: we gather current plan details, sample quotes, and policy documents directly from each provider.
  2. Hands-on testing: we test the quote flow, account dashboard, and mobile app the way a real customer would.
  3. Vet review: a licensed veterinarian checks every review for medical and coverage accuracy.
  4. Scoring: two researchers independently score each provider against the 100-point rubric, then reconcile.
  5. Monthly refresh: prices and policy details are re-checked every month; scores update when providers change.

Independence promise

PetInsurely may earn a commission from partner links, but commissions never influence scores or rankings. Providers cannot pay for placement, and our methodology is published here for anyone to audit. Reviews marked “TBA” are placeholders — the provider hasn’t completed our full review yet.
